I recently had a seminar on contouring and it was a success. The students were amazed at the transformation.
Subsequently, I thought to share my tips on contouring perfectly and below is the finished look from the tutorial.
The purpose of contouring is to create dimension in the face, so if you haven't mastered the art of contouring or highlighting, keep reading.
Contouring and highlighting take time to practice so don't expect to be a pro the first time you try it.
Firstly, color matching is key. Find a color that matches your skin. A little goes a long way when contouring. If you are light skinned, start with the minimal application and you can build layers to reach the desired result.
Contouring is when you use a matte powder, cream, liquid or stick products that is a few shades darker than your skin tone to darken areas you would like to reshape like the nose, chin, cheekbones, and forehead.
The highlighter is meant to attract light, creating the illusion of brightness and height. It is often used in addition to contouring to lift and push features back.
When contouring and highlighting your face, start with highlighting.
WHY DO WE CONTOUR AND HIGHLIGHT?
Contouring creates a sculpted look that can help your nose appear slimmer, your forehead smaller and your cheekbones edgier.
Highlighting is the clear-cut opposite of contouring. Instead of shadows, it adds light to the face.
DO YOU PUT FOUNDATION ON BEFORE CONTOURING?
Before you contour your face, apply a foundation the same color as your skin over your face. Next, you need a foundation or concealer that is about two shades lighter than your base foundation to highlight where the sun would normally hit. Then, you need a foundation and concealer that is two shades darker to contour places you want to recede.
Don't go darker than two shades below your normal skin tone or your makeup won't look natural.
When contouring or highlighting, make sure all your products are either cream or powder; don't mix both.
When blending the cream products, make sure to use a setting powder. It helps keep everything in place and gives the look a smooth finish.
HOW TO BLEND HIGHLIGHTING PRODUCTS
Use a beauty blender dampened with water or setting spray to blend in the product.
Even though it's pretty tempting to use your hands to blend, use a brush or preferably a beauty blender in order to create a flawless finish.
P.S. Quite a number of people often ask this question; Does concealer go on before foundation? Always apply your foundation all over before applying concealer. You only need to conceal spots with a small dot because the foundation covers up a lot of imperfection on its own.
